"ISO" covers dozens of standards, and the alphabet soup of numbers makes it hard to know which one you actually need. The quickest way to decide is to start from what you are trying to prove, not from the number.
Match the standard to your goal
- Consistent quality and fewer mistakes: ISO 9001, the quality management standard, and the one most tenders ask for first.
- Environmental responsibility and greener tenders: ISO 14001.
- Workplace health and safety: ISO 45001, which supports your WHS duties.
- Protecting information and customer data: ISO 27001.
- Medical devices: ISO 13485.
- Keeping running through disruption: ISO 22301, business continuity.
- Governing your use of AI: ISO 42001.
- Cutting energy use and cost: ISO 50001.
Often, the tender or customer decides for you
If you are chasing a specific contract, the tender documents usually name the standard. ISO 9001 is the most common gate; government and construction work increasingly add 14001 and 45001; data-heavy and regulated work adds 27001. When you need more than one
Many established businesses hold several standards. They share the same backbone (the ISO harmonised structure), so 9001, 14001 and 45001 are usually run as one integrated management system rather than three separate ones, which keeps documentation and audits lean.
