What ISO 22000 certification involves

ISO 22000 combines HACCP principles, prerequisite programmes and a management-system approach into one framework for controlling food safety across your supply chain. IMSM builds the system around how your business actually operates rather than handing you a generic template, then guides you to certification through a JAS-ANZ-accredited third-party body. One fixed fee, agreed upfront, with no hourly surprises.

Hazard analysis

We work through your products and processes to identify the biological, chemical, physical and allergen hazards that could reasonably occur, and assess where they need to be controlled.

HACCP plan and critical control points

IMSM helps you set critical control points with clear limits, monitoring and corrective actions, so the hazards that matter most are actively kept in check.

Prerequisite programmes (PRPs and oPRPs)

We establish the foundational controls — hygiene, cleaning, pest control, maintenance and the work environment — plus the operational prerequisite programmes selected through your hazard analysis.

Traceability and recall readiness

We put in place a traceability system that tracks ingredients and product through production, along with withdrawal and recall procedures you can rely on if something goes wrong.

Documentation built around your business

Rather than a generic manual, we shape the policies, procedures and records around how your team already works, so the system is practical to run and easy to follow.

Internal audit and certification support

We prepare your team, run internal audits and management review, then guide you through the Stage 1 and Stage 2 assessment with your JAS-ANZ-accredited certification body.

What ISO 22000 does for your business

Top reason to certify

Meet retailer and supermarket supplier requirements

Major Australian retailers, supermarkets and foodservice chains increasingly expect a recognised food safety management system before they will list or reorder from a supplier. ISO 22000 gives buyers the independent assurance they ask for.

Open up export markets

Overseas buyers and importing authorities want proof that food safety is managed to an international standard. Certification is a globally understood credential that helps Australian producers qualify for export tenders and cross-border contracts.

Support FSANZ and regulatory compliance

Australian food businesses must run HACCP-based food safety programmes under the FSANZ Food Standards Code. ISO 22000 is built on HACCP, so the system you put in place reinforces the controls regulators and local councils expect.

Reduce recall and liability risk

Structured hazard analysis, traceability and controlled processes make contamination and non-conforming product far easier to prevent, contain and trace — protecting your brand and limiting the cost and disruption of a recall.

Build customer and consumer trust

A certified food safety system is a clear, verifiable signal to buyers, auditors and consumers that safe food is managed deliberately at every step, not left to chance.

Run a tighter, more efficient operation

Defining processes, responsibilities and monitoring points reduces waste, rework and duplicated effort, so food safety and everyday operational efficiency improve together.

ISO 22000, common questions

Is ISO 22000 a legal requirement in Australia?

No. ISO 22000 is voluntary, but Australian food businesses must comply with the FSANZ Food Standards Code, which requires HACCP-based food safety programmes for many categories. Because ISO 22000 is built on HACCP, certification supports the controls regulators expect while also giving you a recognised credential for retailers and export markets.

What is the difference between ISO 22000 and HACCP?

HACCP is a method for identifying and controlling food safety hazards. ISO 22000 wraps HACCP inside a complete management system — adding prerequisite programmes, leadership, traceability, continual improvement and management review — so food safety is managed systematically across the whole operation rather than at a few control points.

How is ISO 22000 different from FSSC 22000?

FSSC 22000 is a GFSI-recognised scheme that builds on ISO 22000 by adding sector-specific technical requirements. ISO 22000 is often the right foundation, and for suppliers whose customers specifically require a GFSI-benchmarked certificate we can talk through how the two relate before you commit to a path.

How long does ISO 22000 certification take?

It depends on the size of your business and how much food-safety documentation and HACCP work you already have in place. After a gap analysis we map exactly what is needed and agree a clear, fixed timeline with you, so you know what to expect from the start.

Does ISO 22000 work alongside ISO 9001?

Yes. ISO 22000 shares the same high-level management-system structure as ISO 9001, so the two integrate well. Many food businesses run them together to cover both product quality and food safety, and we can build the systems so they reinforce rather than duplicate each other.

Who certifies our system, and is the certificate independent?

Certification is carried out by a JAS-ANZ-accredited third-party certification body, independent of IMSM. We build and prepare your food safety management system and support you through the Stage 1 and Stage 2 audits, and the accredited body issues the certificate — which is what gives it credibility with retailers, buyers and export markets.
