Why accreditation, not certification
It is accreditation via NATA
17025 is not a certification you buy. NATA assesses your laboratory's competence for specific tests or calibrations and grants accreditation. IMSM gets you ready for that assessment.
Scope-specific recognition
Accreditation is granted for a defined scope of methods and activities. We help you prepare the system and evidence that supports the scope you want recognised.
Assessment-ready, not just documented
A folder of procedures is not enough. We make sure the system is implemented and working so it stands up to a NATA technical assessment.
Built around your laboratory
We shape the management system and technical controls to how your lab genuinely works, rather than forcing a generic template on you.

ISO/IEC 17025 covers two things together: a sound laboratory management system and demonstrated technical competence. IMSM builds both around how your lab actually operates and gets you assessment-ready for NATA accreditation, with your documentation, methods and records in order before the assessor arrives. One fixed fee, agreed upfront, with no hourly surprises.
Management system + technical competence
17025 asks for both: how the lab is run and controlled, and proof that it is technically capable of the work it reports. We build the two so they support each other.
Method validation and verification
We help you show that the methods you use are fit for purpose and produce valid results, with the evidence documented and ready for assessment.
Measurement uncertainty
One of the trickier parts of 17025. We work through how uncertainty is estimated and reported for your results so it holds up under review.
Equipment calibration and traceability
We set up the controls that keep your equipment calibrated and your measurements traceable to national or international references.
Competence of personnel
We put in place the training, authorisation and competence records that demonstrate the right people are doing the right work.
Internal audit and review
We establish internal audits and management review so the system keeps working and problems are found and fixed before an assessor does.
What ISO/IEC 17025 does for your business
Results that are recognised
NATA accreditation to ISO/IEC 17025 is respected across Australia and internationally, so your test and calibration data carries weight with clients, regulators and trading partners.
Regulatory and tender acceptance
Many regulators, government bodies and tenders will only accept results from an accredited laboratory. Accreditation opens work that is otherwise closed to you.
Meeting client requirements
Customers increasingly specify accredited testing or calibration in their contracts. Accreditation lets you say yes with confidence and win that business.
Measurement you can defend
Traceable measurements and properly estimated uncertainty mean your results stand up to scrutiny, disputes and re-checking.
Less re-testing and rework
Reliable, consistent methods reduce disputed results, repeat work and the cost of getting things wrong the first time.
A genuine competitive edge
Accreditation sets your laboratory apart from non-accredited providers and signals technical credibility no marketing claim can match.

ISO/IEC 17025, common questions
Is ISO/IEC 17025 a certification?+
No. In Australia, 17025 is achieved through accreditation, not certification. NATA (the National Association of Testing Authorities) assesses your laboratory's technical competence and grants accreditation for a defined scope of testing or calibration. IMSM helps you implement the standard and become assessment-ready; NATA grants the accreditation.
Who grants ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation in Australia?+
NATA is Australia's recognised accreditation body for laboratories. Accreditation follows an on-site assessment of your management system and technical competence against ISO/IEC 17025. IMSM prepares your laboratory for that assessment; the accreditation decision rests with NATA.
How long does it take?+
It depends on the size and scope of your laboratory, the methods you want accredited and how much documentation you already have in place. We start with a gap analysis of your current position and agree a clear, fixed timeline from there, so you know exactly what is involved before we begin.
What is the difference between 17025 and ISO 9001?+
ISO 9001 is about a general quality management system. ISO/IEC 17025 goes further for laboratories, adding technical competence requirements such as method validation, measurement uncertainty, traceability and personnel competence. A well-managed lab still has to prove it is technically capable to meet 17025.
What does the fixed fee cover?+
One fee, agreed upfront, covers the consultancy to build your management system and technical documentation and get you assessment-ready. There is no hourly billing and no surprise add-ons. NATA's own assessment and accreditation charges are separate and paid to NATA.
What are the hardest parts of 17025 to get right?+
Laboratories most often struggle with measurement uncertainty, method validation and demonstrating traceability and personnel competence. These are exactly the areas your dedicated IMSM consultant works through with you, so the evidence is sound before a NATA assessor reviews it.
