What R2v3 actually asks of you
Reuse before recycling
R2v3 sets a hierarchy of responsible management strategies — reuse and repair rank above materials recovery, and your processes need to reflect that order of preference.
Data security throughout
Sanitisation isn't a bolt-on. R2v3 expects documented data-security controls, verified wiping or destruction, and records that prove every data-bearing device was handled properly.
Accountability down the chain
You're responsible not just for your own site but for where material goes next — R2v3 requires due-diligence on each downstream vendor in your recycling chain.
Certified by an approved body
R2v3 certificates are only issued by R2/SERI-approved certification bodies working under accreditation, which is exactly the route IMSM prepares you for.

R2v3 (the SERI R2 Standard, version 3) is the world's leading standard for responsible electronics recycling and IT asset disposition, combining data security, environmental performance, worker health and safety, and downstream due-diligence in one framework. IMSM builds the whole system around how your operation actually works, then guides you through certification by an R2/SERI-approved, accredited certification body. All for a single fixed fee, agreed upfront.
An EH&S management system plus R2v3 Core
You build the environmental, health and safety management system that underpins R2v3, then layer on the ten Core Requirements every certified facility must meet.
Data sanitisation you can certify
Documented procedures for wiping and destroying data-bearing devices, with access controls, sampling, verification and an incident-response process behind them.
Handling focus materials safely
Identifying and controlling the higher-risk 'focus materials' — such as circuit boards, batteries, mercury and CRT glass — so they are managed and moved responsibly.
Downstream vendor due-diligence
Mapping your recycling chain and vetting every downstream vendor, so material only flows to operators who manage it to the same responsible standard.
Tracking and throughput records
Recording what comes in, what leaves and what is held, so you can reconcile inventory and prove nothing has been stockpiled, dumped or lost.
Test, repair and reuse
Where you refurbish, functional testing, grading and repair processes that put reuse first — the highest tier of R2v3's responsible-management hierarchy.
What R2v3 does for your business
Win corporate & government ITAD work
R2v3 is a stated prerequisite in a growing number of enterprise and public-sector tenders for asset disposal and recycling. Certification puts you on the shortlist instead of out of the running.
Give clients real data-security assurance
Certified, auditable data sanitisation gives your customers documented proof their drives were wiped or destroyed — the assurance their own privacy and security obligations require.
Stay ahead of e-waste compliance
With landfill bans tightening across Victoria, South Australia, Western Australia and beyond, R2v3's environmental controls help you demonstrate responsible, legally compliant handling of every stream.
Prove your downstream is responsible
R2v3's downstream due-diligence means you can show exactly where material goes and that each vendor in the chain is managing it responsibly — no more unverified 'trust us' recycling.
Protect your brand and limit liability
A data breach or an illegal export traced back to your yard is an existential risk. R2v3's controls and records reduce that exposure and protect your reputation.
Stand out from uncertified competitors
In a crowded recycling and ITAD market, an internationally recognised certificate is hard, credible evidence that separates you from operators who can only make claims.

R2v3, common questions
How long does R2v3 certification take?+
It depends on the size and complexity of your operation, the processes you certify to, and how much documentation you already have in place. Rather than quote a generic timeframe, your IMSM consultant sets a realistic, fixed timeline with you at the gap-analysis stage, once we've seen how you actually work.
How does R2v3 handle data security and sanitisation?+
Data security is central to R2v3. You need documented sanitisation procedures, access controls and an incident-response process, with wiping or destruction verified and recorded for the data-bearing devices you handle. That gives your clients auditable proof their information was properly destroyed — the assurance corporate and government customers increasingly demand.
How does R2v3 relate to ISO 14001 and ISO 45001?+
R2v3 requires a certified environmental, health and safety management system to sit underneath it, and ISO 14001 (environmental) and ISO 45001 (health and safety) are the recognised way to meet that. If you already hold them they feed straight into your R2v3 system; if not, IMSM can build them alongside your R2v3 work as a single project.
Which parts of R2v3 apply to my business?+
Every certified facility meets the Core Requirements. On top of that you certify only to the Process Requirement appendices relevant to what you do — for example data sanitisation, test and repair, materials recovery or brokering. Your consultant helps you scope exactly which apply so you're not doing work you don't need.
Does R2v3 help with Australia's e-waste landfill bans?+
Yes. With landfill bans now in force in Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia and expectations tightening elsewhere, R2v3's environmental controls, tracking and downstream due-diligence give you a structured, auditable way to demonstrate responsible, compliant handling of e-waste streams.
Who can actually issue an R2v3 certificate?+
R2v3 certificates are issued only by certification bodies that are approved by R2/SERI and hold the relevant accreditation. IMSM prepares your business and system so you're ready to pass that independent audit — we do the heavy lifting so certification day is a formality, not a scramble.
