What IATF 16949 certification involves

IATF 16949 is the automotive industry's quality management system, built on the ISO 9001 base and adding the defect-prevention discipline, core tools and customer-specific requirements the sector runs on. It is not a stand-alone standard — it works in conjunction with ISO 9001, and IMSM builds the whole system around how your business actually manufactures and supplies, then arranges certification through a recognised third-party body. One fixed fee, agreed before we start.

The ISO 9001 foundation

IATF 16949 sits on the ISO 9001 quality management framework — leadership, risk-based thinking, defined processes and continual improvement. If you already run ISO 9001, that groundwork carries straight across; if not, we build it in as part of the project.

The automotive core tools

We help you put the five core tools to work: Advanced Product Quality Planning (APQP), Production Part Approval Process (PPAP), Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA), Measurement System Analysis (MSA) and Statistical Process Control (SPC) — the practical toolkit the standard is built around.

Customer-specific requirements

Your automotive customers each publish their own requirements. We identify the ones that apply to you and fold them into your system so audits and customer reviews find them already covered.

Product safety and controls

The standard puts specific weight on product-safety-related parts and characteristics. We help you identify them, assign the right controls and document how you manage them end to end.

Traceability through the process

From incoming material to dispatched part, we set up the traceability records that let you pinpoint exactly what went into each batch — essential for containment, recall readiness and customer confidence.

Plain-English documentation

We write your procedures, control plans and records in language your team actually uses on the floor, matched to how you already work — so the system gets used, not filed away for the auditor.

What IATF 16949 does for your business

Top reason to certify

Get on the approved-supplier list

Automotive OEMs and Tier-1 manufacturers make IATF 16949 a condition of doing business. Certification is what puts you on the approved-supplier register and keeps you eligible to quote for work.

Open the global automotive supply chain

IATF 16949 is recognised across the world's vehicle makers and their supply chains. One certificate signals to customers in Australia and overseas that your quality system meets the same bar as their existing suppliers.

Prevent defects before they ship

The standard's core-tools discipline — APQP, PPAP, FMEA, MSA and SPC — moves you from catching problems at inspection to designing them out upfront, cutting scrap, rework and the cost of getting it wrong.

Reduce warranty and recall exposure

Robust traceability, product safety controls and process discipline mean that when an issue does arise, you can contain it fast, identify affected batches and limit the warranty, recall and reputational damage.

Meet customer-specific requirements

Each automotive customer layers its own requirements on top of the standard. A properly built IATF 16949 system gives you the structure to manage and demonstrate compliance with every customer's specifics, not just the base standard.

Compete on more than price

In a sector where quality failures are costly and trust is everything, certification is a genuine differentiator — it tells buyers you can deliver consistent, conforming parts at volume, which is often what wins the contract.

IATF 16949, common questions

How long does IATF 16949 certification take?

It depends on the size and complexity of your operation and how mature your existing quality management system is — a business already certified to ISO 9001 has a head start over one starting from scratch. Rather than quote a generic timeframe, we set a realistic, fixed timeline at the gap-analysis stage once we've seen where you actually stand.

What's the relationship between ISO 9001 and IATF 16949?

IATF 16949 is built on ISO 9001 and can't stand alone — it's implemented in conjunction with the ISO 9001 requirements, adding automotive-specific rules, the core tools and customer-specific requirements on top. In practice, ISO 9001 is the foundation and IATF 16949 is the automotive layer above it. If you already hold ISO 9001, much of that work carries directly across.

Do we really need IATF 16949, or is ISO 9001 enough?

For most of the automotive supply chain the customer decides, not you. OEMs and Tier-1 manufacturers commonly make IATF 16949 a condition of being an approved supplier — ISO 9001 alone won't get you onto their list. If you supply, or want to supply, the automotive sector, IATF 16949 is usually the standard that's actually required.

Who can issue a valid IATF 16949 certificate in Australia?

Certification can only be granted by a certification body that is recognised by the IATF and appropriately accredited — in Australia that means a JAS-ANZ-accredited body. IMSM prepares your system and coordinates that independent assessment; we're your consultancy, not the certifying body, which keeps the certification credible and impartial.

What does the fixed fee cover?

Your fee is agreed upfront before any work begins and covers the consultancy to build your IATF 16949 system and prepare you for assessment — no hourly billing and no surprises. We're transparent about what sits inside the project and what the independent certification body charges separately for the audit itself.

We're a small parts supplier — is IATF 16949 realistic for us?

Yes. Plenty of Australian SMEs in components, plastics, metal and electronics hold IATF 16949 because their customers require it. We scale the system to the size and complexity of your business, building the core tools and controls into how you already work so it's practical for a smaller team to run and maintain.
