Once a business needs more than one ISO standard, a choice appears: run each as a separate system, or combine them into one. The combined approach is called an integrated management system, or IMS — and for most businesses it's the smarter option.
The idea in one sentence
An IMS is a single management system that satisfies the requirements of two or more standards at once — for example ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 — rather than three separate systems running in parallel.
Why it works
Modern ISO management-system standards are built on a common framework (often called the harmonised structure). They share the same high-level requirements around leadership, planning, support, operation, performance evaluation and improvement. So a large proportion of what each standard asks for is effectively the same underlying work — a document-control process, an internal-audit process, a management review, a way of handling non-conformance.
Run them separately and you duplicate all of that. Integrate them and you do it once, with the standard-specific parts (environmental aspects, safety hazards, quality controls) layered on top.

Is it right for you?
If you only need one standard, you don't need an IMS — a single system is exactly right. But if your tenders or customers ask for several (very common in construction, manufacturing and food and beverage), integrating them from the start saves duplicated effort now and every year afterwards.
